Shevat 5784 (January 10, 2024)

As the days finally start to grow longer and we welcome the Hebrew month of Shevat, I feel a surge of renewed energy and inspiration. This season, marked by the blossoming almond trees in Eretz Yisrael, symbolizes growth and renewal.

In the spirit of embracing change and new beginnings, I am thrilled to announce my new role as the Communications Manager at Society Hill Synagogue, starting later in Shevat. This opportunity aligns with my commitment to fostering connections within the Philadelphia Jewish community, and will allow me to continue my journey toward ordination.

Over the holiday break, I took time to rest and recharge with my partner LeBron, my parents, friends old and new, and my dogs, Pepper & Oreo. I've also been working on

This Shevat, as we witness the symbolic bloom of almond trees, I am thinking about the potential for personal and communal growth and resilience found in facing challenges.

May this month be a time of reflection, growth, and embracing the enduring strength within us. Here's to the blossoming of wisdom and the exciting new journeys that lie ahead.

With love always,

Shvat Gayyfilte.Fish Updates

The mazal for Shevat, Aquarius, associated with the vessel of water, ties beautifully into the legacy of Miriam. Miriam, linked to vessels of water and a mysterious well sustaining the Israelites, inspires us to take special care in fulfilling our obligation to protect and preserve the environment. Shevat also encourages contemplation by infusing daily actions with a deeper spiritual significance.

Here's a Shvat prompt to think/write/draw/meditate about, and you can check out some of my popular media from Tevet below.

Shvat Prompt

And Miriam the prophetess, the sister of Aaron, took a timbrel in her hand; and all the women went out after her with timbrels and with dances.

- Exodus 15:20

We read this line of Torah this month on Shabbat Shirah (the Shabbat of Song, this year it's Jan 26-27). It's the inspiration for one of my favorite Debbie Friedman songs, "Miriam's Song".

Think about times in your life when you've felt pure joy or a sense of liberation. How does the imagery of Miriam with her timbrel connect with those personal experiences? Consider the power of music, dance, and communal celebration in expressing and amplifying moments of happiness. Reflect on the spirit of Miriam's leadership and envision how you might incorporate similar elements of joyous expression into your own life during moments of triumph or gratitude.
